In the heart of Sabah’s vibrant arts scene, Ghadaffi Lamdin, better known as Lazy Aphik, is a name you’ll want to remember. Born and raised in the small town of Kota Belud in northern Borneo, Lazy Aphik has turned his love for hip-hop and skate culture into a budding career that’s steadily gaining recognition.
From Nu-Metal Roots to Graffiti Greatness
Lazy Aphik’s artistic journey began with the pulse-pounding beats of nu-metal bands like Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, and Linkin Park. These early influences drew him into the world of hip-hop and graffiti. “I taught myself graphic design, and that’s what I keep doing until now,” he says. His work, deeply inspired by the graffiti movement, showcases his dedication to this dynamic art form.
The Hustle: Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Milestones
The path to success hasn’t been easy. With limited public support, Lazy Aphik had to continually create awareness about arts, design, and events. His relentless efforts led to some notable moments, such as a nationwide tour with Converse Malaysia in 2011 and a recent collaboration with LG Malaysia for a street dance competition.
Proudest Moments and Future Aspirations
One of his proudest achievements was being featured in Agenda Lokalism, a national creative movement celebrating top-tier entrepreneurs. When asked about the impact of his work, he humbly states, “I seriously don’t know how. I like to think my work only impacted my growth.”
Sabah’s Unique Artistic Vibe
According to Lazy Aphik, Sabah’s arts scene is distinctively unique. Its separation from mainland Malaysia gives it a unique flavour that he’s proud to be a part of. Looking to the future, he hopes for more international collaborations and a thriving local scene that appreciates the arts. His advice for aspiring artists? “Find another job. In seriousness, this field is not for the weak mind.”
Beyond the Canvas
Outside his professional work, Lazy Aphik enjoys street photography and has a soft spot for cats. If given the chance to collaborate with any artist, it would be Nigo from Human Made, who has greatly influenced pop culture.
Words to Live By
As our conversation draws to a close, Lazy Aphik leaves us with a thought-provoking nugget of wisdom: “Seek inspiration from everything around you. Stop for a moment and be inspired.” In a world that often rushes past the little details, his reminder to pause and find beauty in the everyday resonates deeply.
Lazy Aphik’s journey is just beginning, and his story is one to watch. Stay tuned as this talented artist continues to shape and inspire Sabah’s art scene and beyond.
